I am not sure what my finals thoughts on my WLE are. I enjoyed my experience interning here alot. I learned alot, worked alot, and got to meet and know a awesome group of people that run AK Press. I really enjoyed coming there for the past few weeks. I hope I can volunteer there later on in life and keep in contact with the people that work there. This experience really makes me want to work at a workers collective when I am older. The environment is alot more enjoyable, the workers are closer to each other and I like the consensus decision making. Add Comment Blog #9 12/15/2011
Today at my internship I helped work on their new website. I checked and entered information on the books they carry. I also helped organize books in the warehouse and moved a bunch of shelves and books. I have improved as an intern by helping out more and doing more work. The great thing about my workplace is my coworkers are really nice, supportive, cool and good role models. Blog #8 12/05/2011
In order to find my WLE and get hired, I had to just call in and ask. After that I went in for not really an interview but a sort of an introduction to get to know the people at my workplace. The most effective way of looking for a job and getting hired is by calling up and asking for one. As a result of my WLE, I think being a professional or a responsible adult in the work world means less about how you dress and act and more about how you collaborate and work. Blog #7 12/05/2011
I learned that I can work hard if I am interested in what I am doing. I also put more effort into things I am interested in. The main challenge I have is getting to my workplace, sometimes I miss the bus and have to walk to bart and what not. Besides that everything is not much of a challenge for me. A life lesson I learned from working at my workplace is that being organized helps alot and working collectively on things make things much easier. My wle effects people by getting them knowledge about the world around them and a different perspective then what the corporations are feeding them. Blog #6 12/05/2011
_The two leadership skills I use the most at my workplace are Complete Projects Effectively and Collaborate Productively. I complete projects effectively by finding out ways to complete my tasks and organizing my work into manageable sections. I collaborate productively by lending a hand and helping out the other people at my workplace. I am strong at using these skills because of practicing them in school for almost 4 years. Using these leadership ship skills help make work alot easier and organized. These skills made me prepared to do work at a workplace. Blog #5 11/10/2011
Today at my internship I worked on my workplaces new website. I went through the book database and check for errors. I had a list of the publishers books and went through everyone checking that the right info was entered into the database, after that I changed any info that was incorrect. This work Is a part of my project that was mentioned in the previous blog post. Blog Post #4 11/04/2011
For my project I will either help them work on there new website or reorganize the bookshelves and inventory numbers. Both of these projects will benefit my workplace greatly. I intend to complete both of these projects by the end of my WLE. I have already started working on both of them. My mentor's came up with this idea for my because I had trouble thinking up a project. I am excited for this project because it will be interesting and hard work. In order to complete this project I need to just continue working on what I have started. Blog #3 10/31/2011
I don't have a main responsibility. I don't have a title either. The types of tasks I usually do each week are things the other people at my work have put off or things they need help doing. I do general just help out with whatever needs to be done that day. I have relabeled books, organized books, packed and shipped books and various other things. A regular day I come in at 9 or 10. I talk to everyone and see what needs to be done. Then I get to work. After I complete one task I will see if there is anything else for me to do. Then I take lunch and sometimes go for a walk. When I return I finish up what I was working on or start out on something new u Blog #2 10/19/2011
My two main mentors are Bill and Dan. They don't really have specific work titles. Bill handles fiances and accounting. Dan handles customers and orders. A typical day consists of them doing those things and helping out with anything else that needs to be done. They don't really have a education background but they have acquired skills from working at other places beforehand to work here. Blog #1 10/19/2011
I work at AK Press. A book publishing and distribution company. It is a small workers collective. It is located in a warehouse in Oakland. 3 people not including me work there. My workplace serves the public education, knowledge, and books. My workplace strength is that it is run by hard working people that care about what they are doing. A weakness is the current disorganization due to construction on the building. | Archives |
